Welcome New Students

Welcome to the Mailman School of Public Health! We’re thrilled to have you join our community as you begin your journey toward becoming a leader in global health. New Student Orientation consists of both asynchronous and synchronous activities during the summer. Towards the end of July, all students will receive an invitation to join our CourseWorks site to complete pre-orientation - a series of online, self-paced modules. In addition to Pre-Orientation, all degree programs will have a live Orientation. Dates and times vary by degree program. While this site is here to guide you with all things orientation, your portal will continue to provide specific information tailored to you and your degree program.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How is New Student Orientation structured?

New student orientation consists of two parts: Asynchronous (Pre-Orientation) and Synchronous (Orientation Week). Pre-orientation is hosted on CourseWorks, our web-based learning management system. Pre-orientation consists of a series of self-paced activities designed to be completed over several works during the summer. Students may be asked to complete a quiz, submit an assignment, or mark at task as complete. The content is organized by week to help students stay on track and it is expected that students complete the modules before Orientation Week. For most students, Orientation Week will take place over several days at the end of August and is in-person. Specific schedules based on degree and program will be posted to the student's portal in early August. Certain programs have different orientations and are not required to participate in orientation week. These include: Executive Management Programs in Health Policy and Management (MPH and MHA), Part-Time MHA Program in Health Policy and Management, Advanced MPH Online and MS Online students will have live virtual Orientation sessions.

  • Is Orientation Mandatory?

Yes, all students are required to complete Pre-Orientation and it is highly encouraged for all students to attend Orientation Week or their program's other orientation programs.

  • What if I am unable to attend Orientation Week?

While we strongly encourage all new students to attend Orientation Week, we understand that certain circumstances may prevent participation. Please note that Orientation Week sessions are offered in person only, and virtual options are not available. If you anticipate missing any portion of orientation, we recommend reaching out to your academic department to determine whether any important information or requirements will be missed.

  • Can I bring family or friends with me to Orientation?

Orientation Week is dedicated exclusively to incoming new students. Unfortunately, we are unable to accommodate additional family members or guests.

  • Will there be food at Orientation?

Yes! We do our best to keep students well-fed and accommodate a variety of dietary needs. A light breakfast will be provided each morning of Orientation Week, and lunch will also be available each day.

  • When do I get my schedule?

It depends on your degree program. Some degrees pre-register students for their fall classes like the MPH degree while others like the MS register for classes during Orientation Week. You can learn more about the class registration process here.
